What Kills Zim Music Industry, Why Local Artists Don't Make A Name Beyond Borders

I've been hurt several times seeing local talented musicians failing to earn a living as Professional Artists! So, i had to ask friends from ZIM and Rest of the World, Why most of our local musicians don't make it abroad. Why some Zimbos give much respect to foreign acts than their local talented ones. They all had one of the following answers/reasons:

1. LACK OF FUNDS

  • no sponsorship from government, promoters etc to help build music industry
  • artists got no enough money to pay 4 quality productions
2. DIVIDED ZIM MARKET
  • most people are into foreign music and some believe that local talent can never compete internationally
  • little attention is given to local musicians but you find diehard fanatics of SA HOUSE, JAMAICANS, Naija sound or ANYTHING FOREIGN
  • We see most international acts gettin first class treatment which locals like CHIWONISO, ROKI or WINKY D would never receive
  • do u believe local talent can go far?? come on TEAM LOCAL, empowerment ka lol
3. FAKE #* PROMOTERS  
  • local artists don't get real respect they deserve and always treated as the last option in their COUNTRY
  • If your country promoters don't like you, who will take you seriously on international market
  • promoters wanna make quick money, so they believe local talent would never pull right crowd, ARE OUR ARTISTS THE INFERIOR?
4. NO RESPECT FOR NEW TALENT
  • most of our people don't give a chance to new music regarding it as done by wannabes or copycats! they are labelled as wannabe Jamaicans or Americans etc
  • i think there are talented artists, i managed to share music of SANII MAKHALIMA, TEHN DIAMOND, ALEXIO or CYNTHIA MARE etc Which most US friends agreed they are talented!
  • Why do you respect JAMAICAN Music so much and not local talented artists??
5. EXPOSURE & INDUSTRY PERSONNEL
  • some say EXPOSURE IS PRICELESS, many artists might lack exposure and never think outside the box. Their art may not expose some form of creativity and never reach beyond ZIM market. Yes, some do not know how other international markets operate. 
  • one would agree some artists in Zim lack professionalism and take their deals informally. They would fail to establish successful careers locally and abroad
6. MTV BASE, CHANNEL 'O' FAILED ZIM
  • these are major music channels in Africa, when they play your music videos it's easier to get popular in Africa. 
  • i personally don't like these tv stations coz they never play or promote Zim music videos! is it because our artists are not submitting and shooting good quality videos? No, i've watched quality videos from TK PARADZA, SIMBA TAGZ, TEMBALAMI but i don't see them on these channels
7. SOME FAIL TO ADJUST TO MUSIC DYNAMICS
  • We all know OLIVER MTUKUDZI, MACHESO or MAPFUMO are legends but we can't listen to them forever, enough of them! New young artists can follow their footprints and even do better than them!!
  • SA music industry they now listen to ZAHARA, LIQUIDEEP not HUGH MASEKELA or any old folks 4eva!!
  • Nigeria now listen to P SQUARE, ASA etc not old folks like FEMI KUTI 4eva!! 
8. US MUSIC LABELS DON'T SEE ZIM?
  • how many ZIM artists made it internationally? u answer that
  • US labels focus on music industries with high sales eg naija, SA got most sales in africa, so we see most of their artists getting signed in USA
  • tell me if our locals ROKI or TEHN DIAMOND won't deserve such deals?! i think they are talented to do better than most HYPED artists we see!
  • So the truth to make it TALENT doesn't matter, it's all about who do u know and getting more sales in your local scene get u that international attention!

Some may be wondering how come we are comparing Tuku (OLIVER) to Warren Buffet the third richest man on this planet. Mtukudzi is a gifted "LEGEND" with a deep and gusty voice plus a talent for writing songs that reflects on the daily life and struggles of the people. The answer to this comparison is very simple, when you look at TUKU's success one can see investment in talent and W*B is the richest investor world wide! At the age of 11, he bought three shares of Cities Service Preferred for himself and three for his sister. While in high school he invested in a business owned by his father and bought a farm worked by a tenant farmer. By the time he finished college, Buffett had accumulated more than $90,000 in savings. The 80 year old Buffet is currently worthy $53billion and rated 3rd richest on Forbes list. TUKU began performing in 1977 when he joined the WAGON HEELS, a band which also featured Thomas Mapfumo and the same year marks his release of debut album NDIPEIWO ZANO. The successful legend now enjoys swimming in his guitar-shaped swimming pool, has released 53 albums to date. It's really funny how people regarded musicians in the early 80/90s asMAROMBE (like strolling beggars) but Tuku remained focused to be where he is now.  ....damn they geniuses, patience pays!!
 This is also applies to ZIM URBAN GROOVES ARTISTS, people should support them coz it takes step by step to perfection, one day they will be recognized globally and tells how one must not fall for shortcuts, hard work n patience pay!!!

The new album was mastered in SA by Keith Ferguson, so this explains everything that TOSE  will hold some great quality which can be played on any international radio!
